How to Activate Your eSIM on iPhone | Step-by-Step Guide 2026

You just bought your eSIM for your next trip and you have the QR code in your inbox, but you're not sure what to do next. Don't worry — activating an eSIM on iPhone is much simpler than it seems. In 5 minutes you'll be connected and ready to travel without worrying about roaming.

In this guide I'll walk you through it step by step so you can activate your eSIM without any issues, even if it's your first time doing it.

Before You Start: Prerequisites

Make sure you have everything ready before beginning the process:

✅ What you need:

  • A compatible iPhone: XS, XR or later (2018+)
  • Updated iOS: Version 16.0 or higher recommended
  • A Wi-Fi connection: Required to download the eSIM profile
  • Your NAVEO QR code: The one you received by email after your purchase
  • 5 minutes of your time: The whole process takes 3-5 minutes

⚠️ Important:

  • Your iPhone must be unlocked to work with other carriers
  • You don't need to deactivate your physical SIM — you can use both at the same time
  • Activate your eSIM before you travel, while you still have stable Wi-Fi at home

Step 1: Connect Your iPhone to Wi-Fi

The eSIM needs internet to download and install. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.

Suggested screenshot: Wi-Fi icon in the top-right corner of the iPhone connected to a network

  1. Swipe down from the top-right corner (or up from the bottom on older models)
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi icon
  3. Select your Wi-Fi network
  4. Enter the password if required
  5. Verify the Wi-Fi icon appears blue in the status bar

Why does this matter? Without Wi-Fi, your iPhone can't communicate with NAVEO's servers to download your eSIM profile. Trying to activate over mobile data can result in roaming charges.

Step 2: Go to Settings > Cellular

Now let's open the menu where we'll install your new eSIM.

Suggested screenshot: Main Settings menu with the Cellular icon highlighted

  1. Open the Settings app (gray gear icon)
  2. Scroll down until you find Cellular (or "Mobile Data" in some versions)
  3. Tap Cellular

You'll see your current plan (probably Telcel, AT&T or Movistar) and options to add more plans.

Step 3: Tap "Add Cellular Plan"

This is the magic button that starts your eSIM installation.

Suggested screenshot: Cellular screen with the "Add Cellular Plan" button in blue

  1. On the Cellular screen, look for Add Cellular Plan
  2. Tap this blue button

Your iPhone will automatically open the camera to scan the QR code.

Don't see this option? If "Add Cellular Plan" doesn't appear, your iPhone doesn't support eSIM or you need to update iOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Step 4: Scan Your NAVEO QR Code

Time to use the QR code you received by email after purchasing your eSIM.

Suggested screenshot: iPhone showing the camera pointed at a QR code with the scanning frame

  1. Open the NAVEO email on your iPhone (or on another device if that's easier)
  2. Keep the QR code visible on the screen
  3. Point your iPhone's camera at the QR code
  4. Wait 2-3 seconds until your iPhone recognizes it automatically

Alternative if you can't scan: If the QR code doesn't work or you prefer to enter the details manually:

  1. Tap Enter Details Manually at the bottom
  2. Enter the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from your email
  3. Tap Next

Step 5: Confirm Your eSIM Installation

Your iPhone detected the QR code and will now ask you to confirm the profile installation.

Suggested screenshot: Confirmation screen showing "Cellular Plan" with the "Add Cellular Plan" button

  1. You'll see a screen that says "Cellular Plan" with basic information
  2. Tap Add Cellular Plan at the bottom
  3. Wait 30-60 seconds while your iPhone downloads and installs the profile

During this process you'll see a progress bar. Don't close the app or turn off your iPhone.

To easily identify your eSIM when you have multiple plans, give it a descriptive name.

Suggested screenshot: Labeling screen with options like "Primary", "Secondary", "Travel", "Personal", "Business"

  1. Your iPhone will ask "Label Your Plans"
  2. Select Travel or Secondary for your NAVEO eSIM
  3. Or tap Custom Label and type something like "NAVEO Europe" or "NAVEO USA"
  4. Tap Continue

This label will help you quickly identify which plan you're using, especially if you travel often.

Step 7: Choose Which Plan to Use for Data

Now you decide whether your iPhone will use your physical SIM or your NAVEO eSIM for internet.

Suggested screenshot: "Default Cellular Plan" screen with options to choose between plans

  1. Your iPhone will ask about the "Default Cellular Plan"
  2. Select your NAVEO eSIM (the one you just installed)
  3. Tap Continue

What does this mean?

  • Mobile data: Your NAVEO eSIM (internet during your trip)
  • Calls and SMS: You can keep your physical SIM active (receive calls from home)

Your iPhone will automatically use the eSIM for internet, while still receiving calls and messages on your regular number.

Step 8: Turn On "Allow Cellular Data Switching" (Important for Travelers)

This setting lets your iPhone automatically switch between networks to give you the best coverage.

Suggested screenshot: Cellular settings with the "Allow Cellular Data Switching" toggle enabled in green

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap your NAVEO eSIM (the one you installed)
  3. Enable Allow Cellular Data Switching (green toggle)

Why does this matter? In some countries, your eSIM can connect to multiple partner networks (for example, in Europe it may use Vodafone, Orange or Movistar depending on coverage). This option lets your iPhone automatically pick the best available network.

Step 9: Verify Your eSIM Is Active

Final step: confirm everything worked correctly.

Suggested screenshot: Cellular screen showing both active plans with signal indicators

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. You should see two active plans:
    • Your physical SIM (your regular carrier)
    • Your NAVEO eSIM (with the label you chose)
  3. Both should have signal bars

Final test:

  1. Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi
  2. Open Safari or Chrome
  3. Try loading any web page
  4. If it loads — your eSIM is working!

Frequently Asked Questions About iPhone Activation

Can I activate my eSIM without Wi-Fi, using only mobile data?

Technically yes, but I don't recommend it. You need internet to download the eSIM profile. If you use your regular SIM's data, your carrier could charge you international roaming (especially expensive if you're outside your country). Better to use Wi-Fi for the initial activation.

Do I need to deactivate my physical SIM to use the eSIM?

No. You can use both at the same time thanks to Dual SIM. Set your eSIM as the default data plan for internet, and keep your physical SIM active for calls and SMS. This way you receive calls from home without roaming while using local data abroad.

What happens if I turn off my iPhone after activating the eSIM?

Nothing happens. Once activated, the eSIM stays installed on your iPhone even if you turn it off, restart it, or run out of battery. It's only removed if you delete it manually from Settings > Cellular > Your eSIM > Delete Cellular Plan.

Can I use the same eSIM on my iPhone and my iPad?

No. Each eSIM is tied to a specific device through its unique identifier (IMEI/EID). If you want data on your iPad, you need to buy a separate eSIM for that device. NAVEO offers specific plans for tablets.

My eSIM works but the speed is very slow. What should I do?

Try these solutions:

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode on/off for 10 seconds to reconnect
  2. Verify "Allow Cellular Data Switching" is enabled
  3. Restart your iPhone
  4. In Settings > Cellular > Options, change Voice & Data from 5G Auto to 4G/LTE (some networks have better 4G coverage)
  5. If the problem persists, contact support@mynaveo.com — you may need an updated eSIM profile

How do I remove my eSIM when my trip ends?

You don't need to remove it. You can leave it installed and simply deactivate it:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap your NAVEO eSIM
  3. Turn off Turn On This Line

The eSIM will stay installed but inactive. If you travel to the same destination again, just reactivate the line. If you want to remove it completely: Settings > Cellular > Your eSIM > Delete Cellular Plan.

Does my eSIM expire or do I have to renew it?

NAVEO eSIMs have a specific duration based on the plan you bought (7, 15, 30 days). Once the period expires, the eSIM deactivates automatically. It doesn't renew automatically and doesn't generate additional charges. If you need more time, buy a new plan or a data top-up from mynaveo.com.

Your eSIM Is Activated — What's Next?

Congratulations! Your NAVEO eSIM is now working on your iPhone. Now you can:

  • Travel stress-free: No surprise roaming charges
  • Keep your regular number: Receive calls and SMS at no extra cost
  • Use local data: Browse, use Maps, WhatsApp and social media as if you were at home
  • Share internet: Turn on "Personal Hotspot" to connect your laptop or tablet
  1. Test your connection: Open Google Maps and search for a place near your destination
  2. Download useful apps: Maps.me (offline maps), XE Currency (currency converter), Google Translate
  3. Set up WhatsApp: You don't need to change anything — it will work with your eSIM automatically
  4. Save emergency contacts: Add support@mynaveo.com and NAVEO's WhatsApp number
